News Update Best Newcomer at The National Fish & Chip Awards 2014

Competing with over 10,000 fish and chip shops across the country, The Cod’s Scallops stood out from the crowd with its delicious food, commitment to sourcing sustainable fish and seaside-inspired shop, which regularly sees queues out the door.

Featuring an impressive selection of wet fish featuring many underused fish herring, skate, gurnard, hake and shellfish including crab, lobster, oysters & whelks – all served with chips fried in beef dripping or potato salad – the quality of food wowed judges.

The shop opened just over two years ago and has gone from strength to strength as customers flock from all over to try out the food. Hungry diners can choose to eat in or takeaway. The 26-seated restaurant serves up a wealth of delicious dishes, not to mention an extensive wine and beer list and naughty but nice puds. For those opting for takeaway, they can purchase an insulated thermal bag to keep their food warm until they get home – every 50p from the sale goes to the Fishermen’s Mission Charity.

Owner John Molnar has a passion for serving delicious, great-value food. He spent months sourcing fish, batter recipes, locally grown potatoes and even the takeaway boxes are made within the East Midlands.  Although he won’t reveal all his secrets, he is happy to talk about the win;

“The award is just a fantastic achievement for all involved with the shop. The competition was tough and at various stages we were mystery shopped by judges and inspected from top to bottom. To be crowned best new shop in the UK is just a brilliant start to hopefully another successful year.”

The National Fish & Chip Awards were held at the London Lancaster Hotel on Wednesday 22 January. For more information visit www.fishandchipawards.com.
